Research on exosomes is increasingly appreciated in the clinical setting and it is likely that it will impact even more in the future. Exosomes have been found to carry selective biomarkers of disease, playing an essential role in the transfer of information and molecules between different cells involved in the regulation of several physiological and pathological processes. This Network of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Exosomes (REDiEX) will focus its activity on strengthening the interaction between different Spanish groups that study this type of vesicles. REDiEX will integrate the experience and know-how of the different groups with a clear and innovative vision that will boost translational applications of vesicle analyses in human health. REDiEX will promote online and face-to-face scientific meetings, the mobility of personnel between the different laboratories and the optimization and attraction of resources to study several aspects of vesicle biology:
- 1) the development of new methodologies for the study of exosomes in animal models and patient samples;
- 2) the identification of non-invasive biomarkers;
- 3) search for novel therapeutic targets;
- 4) the analysis of intercellular communication processes mediated by exosomes in models of both development and cancer for the prediction of metastatic niches;
- 5) the role of exosomes as biomarkers and immune mediators and as a tool for diagnosis;
- 6) the development of vaccines against rare parasitic diseases.
Our overall objective is to develop and standardize methodologies, accelerating the identification and development of non-invasive biomarkers as well as define new strategies to tackle major diseases such as cancer and parasitic diseases. Thus, REDiEX signifies a significant advance towards personalized medicine aiming to develop new tools and markers with high social impact that will generate economic benefits and equity in global health.
